Kara Lynn Hopson, 21, of Utqiaġvik, pleaded guilty to the class A misdemeanor charge of domestic violence assault in the fourth degree for causing reckless injury and reached a plea agreement, after which she was found guilty of the same charge. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail with all 30 days suspended. She must pay a $50 police training surcharge and an initial jail surcharge of $50. She has been placed on probation for one year, during which time she may not consume or buy alcohol. She also may not use any controlled substances except those prescribed to her. As a condition of probation, she must also continue treatment with North Slope Borough Behavioral Health until it is completed. She also may not have any contact, either directly or indirectly, with the victim in this case unless the victim files written consent with the court, by order of Magistrate Judge David Roghair, effective Jan. 31.
Charlie T. Ahkiviana, 38, of Utqiaġvik, pleaded guilty to the class A misdemeanor charge of assault in the fourth degree for causing fear of injury and reached a plea agreement. He was ultimately found guilty of disorderly conduct for initiating a challenge to fight. He was sentenced to one day in jail with that day suspended. He must pay a police training surcharge of $50 and an initial jail surcharge of $50. He has also been placed on probation for one year, during which time he may not consume or buy alcohol. In a separate case against him, Ahkiviana was found guilty of the class B misdemeanor charge of violating his conditions of release. He was sentenced to five days in jail with all five days suspended. He must pay additional police training and initial jail surcharges. He has been sentenced to a year of probation for that charge, as well, with the same alcohol restrictions, by order of Judicial Officer David Roghair, effective Feb. 5.
