The Kotzebue Huskies ended their season-opening eight-game losing streak with a thrilling performance this past weekend at the 2018 Ravn Invitational Basketball Tournament in Bethel. The Huskies pounded out a pair of victories and finished third in the event, which was held Jan. 24-26 in the WarriorDome.

The team notched its first victory of the season on Thursday by downing Scammon Bay, 44-43, in the first round of the tournament. The win sent the Huskies into the semifinals to face off with eventual champion Unalaska.

Unalaska dropped Kotzebue into the third-place game with a 75-47 decision on Friday.

The Kotzebue girls also did well in Bethel, taking fourth overall. The Lady Huskies defeated Unalaska by a 71-32 margin in the consolation finals on Saturday. Now 7-4 overall, Kotzebue earned its way into the fourth-place game with a victory over Aniak in the consolation semifinals on Friday.

The Lady Huskies, who are scheduled to compete in the Homer Winter Carnival on Feb. 8-10, opened the tournament with a 44-37 loss to two-time defending Class 1A state champion Scammon Bay. Scammon Bay had its 62-game win streak snapped in the second round with a loss to Bartlett.
