Raiders wrestle to 5th at Lime Solar meet
The Unalaska Raiders turned in an impressive showing on the mat this past weekend at the 2017 Lime Solar/Anchorage Christian School Invitational. Unalaska had seven wrestlers place in the top six in their respective weight classifications and rolled to fifth in the overall team standings with 129.5 points.
Overall, more than 30 of the state's premier Class 1A/2A/3A wrestling programs competed in the two-day tournament. Defending Class 3A state champion Bethel won the meet with 214.5 points. Homer, which finished second to Bethel at the state tournament a year ago, was second at 199.
Blaine Henning turned in one of the Raiders' top performances at the tournament. He wrestled his way to third in the 126-pound division. Henning defeated Grace Christian's Colton Dow by a tight 3-2 margin in the third-place match.
Dustin Ruckman narrowly missed a medal. He finished fourth in the 132-pound ranks.
Chris Garcia, Seth Henning, Curtis Jeppesen and Mathew Faoasau all finished fifth in their divisions, while teammate Quinnton Parker placed sixth in the 220-pound standings. Garcia and Hennings wrestled in the 170- and 195-pound divisions, respectively, while Jeppesen and Faoasau competed in the 113- and 285-pound ranks.
Other Unalaska wrestlers competing in the tournament included John Esnardo, Alexander Esnardo Jr., Landen Shaishinikoff, Raul Garcia, Luke Shaishnikoff, and senior Talon Shaishnikoff. Baily Hahm also wrestled for the UHS squad. She competed ACS girls meet, going 0-2 in the 120-pound classification.
