Whalers run to 9th in Palmer

Michael Hopson raced his way to a top 40 position on Saturday and helped power the Barrow Whalers to a ninth-place finish in the team standings at the 2017 Palmer Invitational. Hopson was among more than 90 runners participating in the Division II 5-kilometer race.
As a team, Barrow's five runners amassed 237 points. Hopson turned in the top performance from any North Slop runner by legging out an impressive time of 19 minutes and 10.48 seconds. His time enabled him to place 39th overall.
Teammates Isiah Mongoyak and Esau Weyiouanna also did well. They two finished 57th and 58th, respectively. Mongoyak turned in a time of 20:04:23, while Weyiouanna checked in at 20:09.13.
Mikal Nelson and Stephan Thompson rounded out the Whalers' efforts in the race. Nelson finished 62nd with a time of 20:23.70, while Thompson raced to 75th at 21:21.07.
Barrow wasn't the only North Slope team competing in the Palmer Invite. Anaktuvak Pass and Point Hope also sent runners to the event, which featured more than 800 runners in two divisions.
Josh Morry and Chase Nay represented Anaktuvak Pass in the race. Morry finished 40th overall at 25:16.19.
Nay was 50th at 26:43.30. Point Hope's Henry Kowunna finished 76th at 21:30.83.
