Kotzebue finishes 6th at Alaska Airlines Classic
The Kotzebue Huskies turned in a solid outing this past weekend at the 2017 Alaska Airlines Classic. The Huskies fought their way to a 1-2 record and placed sixth in the final team standings at the three-day tournament, which was held Jan. 12-14 at West Anchorage High School.
Kotzebue got off to a sour start to the tournament, suffering a 51-41 decision to West Anchorage in the first round.
West took advantage of a slow start offensively by Kotzebue, and fought its way to a slim 18-16 lead in the first half. The Huskies, despite getting hot in the second period and outscoring West by a 10-7 margin, shot just 5-of-17 in the first two quarters of play.
West regained the momentum in the second half and posted a 33-25 run.
Tye Ramoth and Bish Gallahorn powered the Huskies in the loss. Ramoth pushed in a team-high 17 in the frame. Gallahorn added 13.
Kotzebue came storming back in the consolation round. The Huskies dispatched Anchorage Christian in the consolation semifinals by a 50-37 clip.
In the victory, Kotzebue turned a 20-10 run in the third quarter into a solid second-half outing. As a team, Kotzebue scored 30 of its total points in the final 16 minutes of play.
Ramoth and Gallahorn both reached double figures in the contest. Ramoth finished with 15 points, while Gallahorn added 12.
Seth Roetman also played well for Kotzebue. He collected eight points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
With the win over ACS, the Huskies advanced to the fifth-place game to face British Columbia Christian Academy.
BCCA scored 17 points in the first quarter and then held on to take a 57-43 decision.
Despite the loss, the Huskies collected 16 points from Roetman and 14 more from Ramoth.
Gallahorn, who was named to the all-tournament team following the conclusion of the tournament, pitched in eight points and eight rebounds.
