Congressional candidates to debate in Barrow

Alaska's congressional candidates have agreed to a series of debates beginning this week and running through the start of November.

The first debate, to be held Oct. 12 at the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium in Kodiak, will run from 7-9 p.m. and will feature the candidates for Senate. Libertarian candidate Joe Miller and Independent candidate Margaret Stock will go up against incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Senate Fisheries Debate, sponsored by the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. It will be broadcast by Alaska Public Media.

The following week, on Oct. 17, incumbent Republican Rep. Don Young will debate with his Democratic challenger Steve Lindbeck at the Dena'ina Civic Center in Anchorage in the event sponsored by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.

On Oct. 20, Young and Lindbeck will face off once again in Anchorage at the Alaska Forest Association and Resource Development Council Debate at the Hotel Captain Cook.

According to their campaigns, Murkowski and Stock and Young and Lindbeck will participate in respective Senate and House discussions on Oct. 21 at the Alaska Federation of Natives Candidate Forum during the annual AFN convention. Miller has not yet confirmed his attendance.

Also in Fairbanks, on Oct. 24, Young and Lindbeck will participate in the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum.

Then on Oct. 26, Murkowski and Stock will be in Barrow for the Senate Debate on the Arctic, hosted by the Inuit Arctic Business Alliance, which includes members like NANA Regional Corp., Arctic Slope Regional Corp., and Bering Straits Native Corp.

The final debate of the campaign season will take place on Nov. 3. The Debate for the State will be held in Anchorage, sponsored and broadcast by Alaska Public Media.
