Sun shines on Piuraagiaqta
Last weekend's Piuraagiaqta spring festival in Barrow brought residents out to celebrate in fine form. Food, art, play, competition, music and more made for several days of fun for all ages.
Pinochle, snerts, cooking contests, races, sculpture contests, open mic and whaling celebrations were just a few of the weekend's features, put on by the City of Barrow.
Whether strapping two by fours to their feet for a group sprint, or hopping across the snow on whale floats, there were races aplenty. Ilisagvik College Cooperative Extension sponsored musical merriment at Woodsongs Coffee House. Vernon Rexford took first place in the snow sculpture competition for his piece "Whaling Crew Hunting a Bowhead Whale." Tuzzy Consortium Library sponsored a book fair, and the city sponsored races and events throughout the weekend, including the sno-go Grand Prix.
Overall, sunny weather made for a beautiful Piuraagiaqta weekend.
