Outwater, Lady Bears upend Buckland in 1A consolation game
After the Noorvik Lady Bears suffered a 48-46 loss to the Aniak Lady Halfbreeds in the first round of the girls' Class 1A state basketball tournament, the team took a deep breath and vowed to not lose again. On Wednesday afternoon, Emily Outwater and the Lady Bears made good on that promise.
Sparked by a 21-10 third-quarter run, the Lady Bears closed out their 2012-13 season by rolling to a 61-49 win over rival Buckland in the consolation finals in Anchorage's Sullivan Arena.
Outwater, one of four Noorvik players to reach double figures for the Lady Bears, helped Noorvik blow the game open in the third. The NHS standout poured in seven of her 21 points in the frame and led the Lady Bears to a commanding 21-point lead, at 42-21, with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
Buckland, which defeated Noorvik in the finals of the Northwest Arctic regional tournament, used points from Lila Barger, Rosaline Hadley and Emma Thomas in the final 1:58 of play to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 15, at 46-31, at the end of the period.
Buckland, despite fourth-quarter treys from Stephanie Washington and Thomas, was unable to make up the gap in the final eight minutes.
Noorvik held the advantage early in the game. The Lady Bears outscored Buckland by a 12-9 clip in the first period, and stretched that lead to four, at 25-21, at the half with a 13-12 run in the second.
Debra Hersrud finished the game as Noorvik's second-leading scorer by throwing in 14 points. Hannah Cleveland added 12, all coming via four three-point bombs, while Hali Sampson added 10.
Thomas paced the Buckland attack with 20 points. Barger finished with 11, while Taylene Jones contributed seven.
The Lady Bears rolled into the consolation finals fresh off a 44-31 win over the Scammon Bay Lady Blackbirds on Tuesday.
Buckland defeated Chefornak, 56-48, in its consolation semifinal outing.
