Barrow sweeps two from Lady Warriors

The Barrow High School Lady Whalers notched a pair of key Western Conference victories this past weekend by sweeping two games from rival Bethel.

The Lady Whalers closed out the two-game series with a 55-32 decision on Saturday.

Barrow took the opener, 52-25.

The Lady Whaler junior varsity also posted a win on Saturday, claiming a tough 31-29 win over overtime.

Whaler Invite set to tip off on Jan. 31

High school basketball will take center stage next week when the 2013 Whaler Invitational tips off in the Barrow High School gymnasium.

In all, 11 teams from throughout the state will be competing in the boys' and girls' tournament.

Joining the Barrow Lady Whalers in girls' play will be teams from Skyview, Bethel, Glennallen and Anchorage Christian. Skyview, North Pole and Grace Christian will be participating in the boys' bracket.

The tournament will begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday with the championship games.

Huskies place 7th at Unalakleet tournament

The Kotzebue High School Huskies turned in a solid effort on Saturday afternoon en route to taking seventh place at the 2013 Unalakleet Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Kotzebue, which is scheduled to return to Western Conference play this weekend against rival Barrow, closed out the Unalakleet tournament on a high note on Saturday by claiming a 74-36 decision over St. Mary's.

Kotzebue wasn't as fortunate on the first two days of the three-day tournament. The Huskies dropped a 68-52 decision to Elim on Thursday, and then suffered a tough 73-65 setback to Golovin on Friday.

Statistics from the tournament were not available at press time.

Lady Huskies to return to action this week

The Kotzebue Lady Huskies are hoping a few days rest will turn into good news this weekend when they host the Barrow Lady Whalers in Western Conference action.

Kotzebue, which currently sits fourth in the Western Conference standings, will play Barrow on Friday and Saturday in the KHS gymnasium.

Kotzebue was idle this past weekend.

Kivalina grabs 3 wins in weekend action

Kivalina flexed its basketball muscles this weekend in Northwest Arctic School District boys' Class 1A action. The team won all three of its games in round-robin play with Kiana, Buckland and Upriver.

Kivalina opened the tournament with an 85-35 decision over Upriver on Thursday. The team followed that victory with an 86-44 win over rival Buckland in the second round.

The team closed out its effort in the final round with a nail-biting 58-56 win over Kiana.

Kiana finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, notching wins over Buckland (83-31) and Upriver (56-45).

Buckland picked up its lone win of the event with a 57-56 thriller over Upriver on Saturday.

In other area boys' action, Noatak picked up a pair of wins over Selawik. Noatak took a 71-45 win in the first game of the weekend twinbill, and then capped the series with a 53-37 romp on Saturday.

The Selawik girls collected two wins, defeating rival Deering on Friday by a margin of 69-19, and on Saturday by a score of 65-21.
