No one ever told the Kotzebue Lady Huskies traveling to Juneau for basketball would easy. And it certainly wasn't.
Kotzebue dropped three non-conference games last week by participating in the ThunderDome Basketball Tournament at Thunder Mountain High School. Kotzebue, Mt. Edgecumbe, North Pole and Thunder Mountain participated in the round-robin tournament.
Kotzebue, which opened the tournament on Thursday by suffering a 72-26 setback to Thunder Mountain, had a chance to earn a berth in the consolation finals in Friday. Following its loss to Mt. Edgecumbe, the KHS girls fell into a showdown with the North Pole Lady Patriots.
The Lady Huskies managed to hold their own in the first two quarters. Despite facing a much taller opponent, Kotzebue trailed just 17-13 at the end of the first half.
North Pole, however, reeled off a 34-18 run in the third and fourth quarters and claimed the win.
With the win, the Lady Patriots advanced to face Thunder Mountain in the championship game. Kotzebue slipped into a third-round game with Mt. Edgecumbe.
Mt. Edgecumbe claimed a 39-28 decision in the finale.
