Noatak was rocking and rolling this past weekend during the 30th Annual Sivu Tournament. An Arctic tradition that reaches back into the '80s, Sivu opens 1A basketball action. Buckland, Kivalina, Noorvik, and Pt. Hope joined host Noatak in a round robin format for both boys and girls.

Local entities including GCI, Teck, Maniilaq, Bering Air, Era, Kotz Radio, Otz, and Noatak IRA helped make this yearʼs SIVU all the more special. A Lazyboy Lynx Lounge graced the stands along with some half-time games, and when balls werenʼt being shot at the basket, a T-shirt gun blasted presents into the stands to a thunderous crowd.

For the past three decades, Kivalina and Noatak have taken turns hosting Sivu and their boys met up in what proved to be the deciding game of this yearʼs tournament. Noatak held a two-point lead at the half. The Lynx never relinquished the lead but couldnʼt pull away until the final minutes winning by 12, fueled by Anthony Ashbyʼs 25 and Ivan Lutherʼs 16 points. Kivalinaʼs Shield Stalker and Byron Adams did the bulk of scoring for the Quaviks with 22 and 16 respectfully.

On the girls side of the tournament, 2A power house Point Hope was never seriously challenged. In what proved to be the their closest game, they defeated Noorvik 52-37. The Harpooners used a strong fourth quarter to turn a five-point half-time lead into a 15 point win. The Bears managed only five points in the final period while Point Hope netted 13. Chelsea Tooyak led all scorers with 21, getting the charity stripe 11 times; teammates Jasmine Tooyak and Tamera Millik had 11 and 10 points. Hannah Cleveland and Emily Outwater led Noorvik with 12 and 11 points.
