OPINION: Thanksgiving a time to be happy with life, loved ones
November 24th, 2012 | Jason Evans
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. It is, by its very nature, a day that hasn't been oversold or turned into a major marketing ploy mainly because it is day set aside for all of us to be thankful for what we have.
Probably the only creature on the planet that could hate Thanksgiving is the turkey.
This year has been an incredible journey for Kiana and I, and we are very happy and thankful for everything that has been come our way - good and the not so good. It has all played a role in what we have become and accomplished.
For us, this Thanksgiving is even more special for those here in the Evans-Peacock household. This summer, despite a few serious issues, Ki and I saw our family grow as we brought home a beautiful baby girl - Naya Josephine.
With the addition of our new daughter, our family has two beautiful daughters. For that we are so very thankful.
During the time we were traveling back and forth to San Francisco for the baby, our families did so much for us. Kiana's parents and brothers as well as my brothers and sisters spent many hours with us, helping us with whatever they could.
We are so very thankful for our families.
Of course, one of the things that makes Thanksgiving a lot of fun is having everyone gather around the television to watch the NFL Thanksgiving Day football games. Although I grew up in rural Alaska, I enjoy watching the football games, and the time it allows us, as family and friends, to spend together. Even though we all like different teams, we enjoy spending time with one another.
In many ways, that is the one thing that makes Thanksgiving so special. It is one of those times in which our friends and families get together, talk, eat and generally have a good time being together.
In today's world where everyone is working so hard, and our lives are all speeding past at a million miles an hour, it's so nice to take a day to slow down and get reacquainted with the ones you are closest to.
For that, I am very thankful.
Lastly, we are so very thankful that you allow us to come into your homes once a week, whether its to read my column or one of the stories that affect and shape our lives. It is an honor we take very seriously and treasure as much as any award.
We are so thankful for the life we have been given.
Here's hoping you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. May this coming year be as blessed to you as what you and so many have blessed ours to be.
