Whalers place third in Bethel tournament
When talk turns to who may qualify for the Class 3A state wrestling tournament, you won't have to look too hard to find the names of Barrow's Ben Voss and Mark Balanza.
Voss and Balanza both turned in impressive outings this past weekend and helped spur the Barrow to a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the Bethel Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
As a team, the Whalers had 10 wrestlers place in the top six in their respective weight classifications and tallied 60 points. Bethel won the tournament crown with 264 points. Kotzebue and Nome finished second and third, respectively.
Voss headlined the Whalers' efforts by winning the 220-pound division at the two-day meet. He edged out Pilot Station's Stephen Greene in the finals of the bracket to earn the gold medal.
Balanza posted a second-place finish in the 106-pound bracket, finishing behind Bethel's Gage Hoffman in the standings.
Alynne Bankston also did well for BHS in the 106-pound division, placing fourth. Ramey Gerke was fourth in the 113-pound classification, and Devin Amling was fourth in the 152-pound standings.
Ace Edwards was fifth overall in the 160-pund class.
Erwin Mendoza and Colton Brinkeroff also did well at the meet. Mendoza won three of his six matches and finished sixth in the 120-pound bracket, while Brinkeroff went 2-3 and netted sixth in the 145-pound division.
