Lady Whalers advance to state tournament

The Barrow Lady Whalers are headed back to volleyball's "big show."
Barrow posted a 2-1 record this weekend at the Western Conference volleyball tournament and clinched the runner-up berth in the Class 3A state tournament, which will be held on Nov. 8-10 at the 
Curtis Menard Sports Center in Wasilla.
The Lady Whalers, the No. 2 in the Western Conference seeding, opened the tournament with a bang. The BHS spikers dispatched Bethel by a 3-1 margin, winning 23-25, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-21.
With the win over Bethel, the Lady Whalers advanced to the finals to face off against Nome. Nome clinched the Western Conference title with a 25-15, 25-22, 14-25, 16-25 and 15-8 win.
Following its loss to Nome, the Lady Whalers fell into a playback game with Bethel. The Lady Warriors had battled their way into the playback with a win over Kotzebue in the consolation finals.
Barrow won the playback game, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-15.
Kotzebue finished the tournament at 0-2.
Barrow is scheduled to open the state tournament on Thursday morning, at 9:30 a.m., against Valdez, the Aurora Conference champion. Nome will play Monroe Catholic at 11:45 a.m.
