Ambler/Shungnak head volleyball coach Don Thurman can finally believe the unthinkable. The little team that dreamed it could ... actually did.
The Ambler/Shungnak Hunters nailed down the top spot in the upcoming Class 1A mixed-six conference tournament this weekend by grinding out four consecutive wins. The victories enabled the co-op team to improve to 12-1 in conference action.
"It has led to extra anticipation by all the players," said Thurman.
Ambler/Shungnak opened this weekend's play with impressive wins over Buckland and Kiana. Both of their first two wins came in three games.
Kiana rallied back to give the Hunters a scare later on the first day of the two-day tournament.
After Ambler/Shungnak had taken the first game, Kiana stormed back to claim a 26-24 win and even the game county at 1-1.
Ambler/Shungnak regained the upper hand from there, winning the last two games to take the contest 3-1.
Ambler/Shungnak, now 13-2 for the year, defeated Buckland in its only game on Nov. 3.
Noorvik and Noatak also head into the conference tournament with plenty of momentum. Noorvik won all four of its games during the weekend and improved to 10-3 for the year and 8-1 in conference play.
Noatak, 12-3 overall, is 14-4 in conference action.
