Lynx, Bears tip off Mixed Six season with flurry

The Noatak Lynx and Noorvik Bears kicked off the start of the Mixed Six Volleyball season on a high note this past weekend by sweeping through the Spike for Life Tournament in Kotzebue.
Noatak and Noorvik were among eight area teams competing in the event, which was held on Oct. 5-6.
Noatak turned in the biggest effort of the meet. The Lynx pounded out a perfect 6-0 record, including four straight wins on Saturday.
After opening the round-robin tournament with wins over Kiana and Amber/Shungnak, Noatak hit stride on the final day. The Lynx opened Saturday's action with a 25-15, 25-8 victory over Kobuk, and then cruised to a 25-14, 25-12 win over Buckland.
The Lynx closed out the day with a 25-7, 25-15 win over Deering and a second win over Kiana.
Like Noatak, Norvik went unbeaten in the tournament, going 4-0 overall.
After wining their opener on Friday against Kivalina by a close 25-22, 25-17 margin, Noorvik breezed through Saturday's action, defeating Deering (25-17, 25-12), Point Hope (25-16, 25-17), and Kobuk (25-15, 25-5).
Ambler/Shungnak also played well. The team rebounded from its loss to Noatak and finished 3-1 overall.
Buckland, Kivalina and Kobuk all notched wins at the meet.
