A two-vehicle accident in Barrow left one of the drivers in need of emergency aid on Monday, which he received from timely responders.

The North Slope Borough Police Department reports that Detective Sergeant Sundai called in the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Karluk and C Streets in Barrow.

Sundai determined that driver Michael Toovak, 21, was unconscious and without breath or pulse.

Sundai, officer Erich Reed and Peter Williams began emergency CPR on Toovak, and after a short period were able to regain a normal cardiac rhythm and breathing.

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and took over Toovak's care. He was transferred to Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow and later to Anchorage for further medical treatment.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the Police Department reports that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
