This week I sent a text message to our editor letting her know, I would not be able to do a column this week. The text stated, I am traveling today and I don't have my laptop. She joking texted back, OK...how about text your column.

Our editor, Carey Restino, does great pushing me to do things like my column that don't come naturally to me. She wants me to do a column each week and pushes me to stay on track. So I joking texted back, "OK, I will try".

So here is my first column via text message. Well not really, but it is via iPhone. This is a great step, as I am a part-time publisher. I do not work at the paper full time, so I must use a smart phone (iPhone), iPad, laptop and other technology to stay connected to those working on the paper.

I use my iPhone a lot to keep in touch mainly by checking email, but also on texting, and also what the phone was originally for, making calls.

The iPhone is such a great piece of technology. It is not as powerful as a computer but can do all the basic tasks any business owner or busy executive needs; email, internet, apps and now writing columns, letters or other papers.

This spring I bought an iPhone for my wife Kiana. Kiana never felt the need to buy new phone if her phone worked OK. She didn't want to text. She even asked our cell phone provider to block the texting to her phone so she would not even receive them. After several years, she decided to start texting and never looked back. Now after about three months of having an iPhone, she too loves it. She has apps that our daughter Sila can play with that have songs and cartoons.

Its funny how important this small black and sliver phone has become to us. I could say I just about run our papers on my phone.
