After months of fund raising and tough practices after school, Team Barrow (club basketball league in Barrow) made it to Juneau to compete in the "Mike Jackson Memorial Tournament".
Team Barrow girls basketball team lead by longtime coach Jerry Lowery, represented two different divisions, Team B (7/8th grade) and Team C (5/6th grade). They competed against teams from Haines, Petersburg, Craig and several Juneau teams.
Both Barrow girls team took the honors and placed 1st to win their division. The All-Tournament players from Barrow for division B were: Cynthia Kim, Rose Hopson and Alaina Wolgemuth. The All- tournament players for division C were: Kuutuuq Danner, Alissa Pili and Paige Goodwin.
"I am so proud of our team. They work so hard during practice and it's rewarding to see their growth, skills and attitude on the court." says Coach Lowery. "Not only did the team play basketball, but they had an opportunity to learn first-hand about a different place in our own State."
Along with basketball, the team did a little sightseeing. We stopped at the Mendenhall Glacier, something they don't get to see very often. They also visited the Alaska State Capitol where they met Representative Reggie Joule and introduced us all in the chambers. The girls left feeling like VIP's. Thank you Rep. Joule and Christine Hess for taking the time to meet with us.
We would also like to thank Marla Berg and DJ Fauske, both of the NSB Government Affairs Department who helped make this visit to the state capitol possible. The team also had visited a local historic landmark The Shrine of St. Therese.
The shrine is located in a beautiful piece of land that extends out enough to house the chapel and 14 Stations of the Cross (monuments). While there, the girls saw something they never get to see often, sea otters.
A huge Barrow thank you goes to Mansur and Kelly Alzahara who supported the team with cheers and water. Also, to the chaperones Jeremy Goodwin, Billy Pili and Tina Wolgemuth for making sure the girls were safely taken care of.
Thank you to Carolyn and Coach Lowery for all your hard work you did to get the girls to Juneau. Lastly, Quyanaqpak to the parents and girls for making this trip happen.
We are so proud of you for your good attitude, dedication and good sportsmanship. We look forward to competing in more tournaments.
Go Team Barrow!!
