A young Barrow man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting two other Barrow residents over the weekend.

According to Chief Leon Boyea of the North Slope Borough Police Department, Dave A. Evikana, 20, fired four shots inside a Yugit Street home early Saturday morning then fled the scene on a black-and-yellow Ski-doo snowmachine.

He left two adults suffering from gunshot wounds behind him. Sean Z. Gunnells, 26, took a bullet to his right leg, and Jasmine J. Dunbar, 20, was shot in her left leg. They were taken to Samuel Simmons Memorial Hospital in Barrow, where they were treated for their injuries and released.

Police searched for Evikana throughout the weekend, aided by witness reports from Barrow residents, and took him into custody early Monday morning.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder and one count of second-degree weapons misconduct.

It is still too early in the investigation to accurately describe why Evikana took the action he did, said Chief Boyea. It is also not clear at this time whether alcohol was involved in the shooting.

The felony attempted murder charges are punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a $500,000 fine per charge. The weapons misconduct charge, also a felony, can be accompanied by up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Evikana is being held at the North Slope Borough Correctional Facility, where he awaits further court action.
