The Tuzzy Consortium Library has partnered with Fred Ipalook Elementary School to kick off another season of guys reading in Barrow. The program invites men from the community to come and read to the fourth-grade boys during their lunch period. This introduces the boys to male role models that read, and also serves as way for the library to participate in community outreach to students that might otherwise be reluctant readers. Guys Read makes reading fun, engaging and energetic. The Guys Read program is an outreach reading program created by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Library that works to encourage fourth-grade boys to read.

The boys eat their lunches while images from comic books and graphic novels are projected on a large screen at the front of the room. Men from the local community read with the boys and bring the pages to life. Most of the stories are action-packed and humorous and the boys and the men both enjoy them.

So it isn't just boys who are having fun either. Many of the men who have volunteered have asked if they could read to the students again. Everyone is excited for the next week to see what is going to be read.

If you are interested in becoming a Guys Read volunteer please contact Erin Hollingsworth, the Tuzzy Consortium Library Youth Services Librarian, by telephone at 852-4050 or by e-mail at erin.hollingsworth@tuzzy.org.
