The Barrow and Point Hope girls basketball teams played a couple of great games over the weekend, but the Class 3A Whalers outlasted the 2A Harpoonerettes en route to the series sweep.

In Game 1, Jalene Kanayurak scored 5 of her 12 points in overtime to help the Lady Whalers prevail 65-62. Three Barrow starters fouled out in regulation.

"You can never underestimate Point Hope," Barrow coach Jordyn Danner said. "They played intense and came out with a lot of energy."

Barrow's Miriam Diaz and Paige Bowen also scored big buckets for Barrow in OT.

Hilary Lowery led the winners with 16 points.

Point Hope's Chelsea Tooyak led all scorers with 28 points, thanks in part to 7-of-11 foul shooting.

"She hit a couple 3s. She got to the line a lot," Danner said. "She had a lot of and-1s, where she would make the bucket and was fouled."

In Game 2, Barrow pulled out a 60-57 victory thanks to 6-foot-4 center Lynette Hepa's season-high 28 points.

"My favorite move is probably the drop step," Hepa said.

She also had double figures in rebounds.

"She was getting after it on the boards," Danner said.

Lowery added 12 points and Angela Miguel had 9 for the Lady Whalers [11-3].

Jasmine Tooyak scored 22 and Chelsea Tooyak added 14 for Point Hope.
