Local players doing well in college

Former high school basketball stars from Barrow, Kotzebue, Point Hope and Kiana had a solid week on the college hardwood in the NWAACC.

The Highline Lady Thunderbirds of Des Moines, Wash., feature two Alaskans in Nicole Smith of Barrow and Christina Fields of Kotzebue.

Last weekend they helped Highline finish third at the Bellevue College Women's Bulldog Classic, culminating with a 63-60 win over Portland in the consolation final.

Smith, last season's Alaska Class 3A Player of the Year, played 25 minutes and scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She added four rebounds and three assists.

Fields played 13 minutes and grabbed three rebounds. She did not score.

In Aberdeen, Wash., Ruth Nash of Point Hope is a starter for Grays Harbor College.

She pumped in a season-high 18 points in a 59-47 loss to Portland.

Nash played 35 minutes and connected on 7 of 11 shots from the field.

She was all over the stat sheet, adding six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

On the men's side, the Blue Mountain/Grays Harbor game pitted two former rivals against each once again.

me pitted two former rivals against each once again. Barrow's Tyler Adams got bragging rights over Point Hope's Guy Tuzroyluk as Blue Mountain beat Grays Harbor 90-64.

Adams played 30 minutes and scored 9 points to go along with two rebounds.

Tuzroyluk scored three points in nine minutes.

The following night, Blue Mountain lost to South Puget Sound 78-63.

But Adams reached double digits with 13 points in 37 minutes.

He made three triples and added three rebounds and two assists.

In NCAA D2 action, Marisa Atoruk of Kiana is beginning to find her groove at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The former Alaska Class 1A Player of the Year led the Lady Nanooks with four rebounds in a 78-29 loss to the nationally ranked UAA Seawolves.

Atoruk did not score, missing all five threes.
