State suicide council to hold summit

Alaska Statewide Suicide Prevention Council, along with other state agencies, is hosting a two-day summit in January focusing on creating a state suicide prevention plan.

"Casting the Net Upstream" will occur in Anchorage on Jan. 10 and 11. The summit will gather together teams of people from six regions in the state to discuss the large issue of suicide prevention. Applications for teams are being solicited through Dec. 2.

Teams are being sought from Southeast Alaska, the Gulf Coast region, Southwest Alaska, the Anchorage and Matsu region, the Interior and the Northern area.

Regional teams should include people from a variety of organizations that represent the entire region, not just a single community.

In addition, a draft of the suicide prevention plan that will guide efforts by the state of Alaska for the next five years. Members of the public are encouraged to review and provide comment on the draft plan, which is available through the Alaska Online Public Notice System at www.alaska.gov as well as through the state suicide prevention portal, www.StopSuicideAlaska.org. Public comment ends at 5 pm. Nov. 30.
