The birds and the beasts of the far north came to life on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Tuzzy Consortium Library in Barrow when storyteller Brett Dillingham shared a potluck supper and stories with families with young children.
An angry eagle was forced to swim to shore after being outwitted by a diving duck; a snowy owl listened intently for a mouse below the snow; and a pair of friends learned an important lesson about why you should apologize when you've offended someone.
These tales were presented by Dillingham in his unique, compelling style to the delight of about 60 people, including 30 children.
The storytelling program was sponsored by the North Slope Imagination Library and included tips on how to create and tell your own stories to young children.
Brett Dillingham is a world-class storyteller who has circled the globe performing, working with classes of children and holding workshops for parents and teachers.
In Barrow the focus was on how this traditional art can be used at home to help make children ready to succeed when they enter school.
The evening with Brett Dillingham was the first in a series of programs in North Slope villages for families with young children. It was underwritten by a grant from ConocoPhillips.
