Three Kaktovik high school students were inducted into the Harold Kaveolook chapter of the National Honor Society on Feb. 23. Tracy Burns, Michelle Kayotuk, and Danielle Sims participated in the National Honor Society traditional candle ceremony led by fellow student and National Honor Society member, Philip Sittichinli. The students pledged to maintain their current high level of scholarship, service, leadership and good character. Tokens of membership were awarded and, as certificates were read aloud, parents presented them with pins.

Pastor Mary Ann Warden delivered the invocation and five elementary students recited the pledge of allegiance in English and Inupiaq. Glenda Lord, a village health care aide, spoke about the meaning of service and teachers enumerated the students' qualifications for the prestigious society. The communitywide celebration ended with drumming and dancing led by the Kaktovik Dancers.

Sherry Flanigan is a teacher at Harold Kaveolook School in Kaktovik.
