(Courtesy Photo, Pearl Brower) Ukpeagvik Iņupiat Corp. and Umialik Insurance Co. donated donated $200,000 to Ilisagvik College, the college announced. According to Ilisagvik president Beverly Patkotak Grinage, the UIC/Umialik Insurance donation supports the college's Inupiaq studies instructor's salary, adjunct instructors who teach Inupiaq language and culture courses throughout the North Slope and the dual credit program offered to high school students. Grinage said the donation also allows UIC/Umialik Insurance Co. to keep more of its revenues, which benefits UIC shareholders, by taking advantage of a state corporate tax credit. Under the program, UIC/Umialik can write off $150,000 from their state corporate tax burden. Ilisagvik and the North Slope Borough School District's dual credit program allows high school students the chance to earn credits that can be applied toward both their high school and college credit requirements. For many students, this provides their first glimpse into college life. Grinage offered her personal thanks, and that of the college board of trustees, to UIC/Umialik Insurance for its donation. "We all need to work together to give our people a brighter economic future while preserving the cultural values that have sustained us for thousands of years. This donation is just another example of the value of cooperation that has been a hallmark of our culture in making life better for everyone," Grinage said.
