Students battle it out over books

Madeline Carter, Bailey Schildbach and Tom Miller of June Nelson Elementary School in Kotzebue represented the Northwest Arctic Borough School District third- and fourth-grade category during the state "Battle of the Books" tournament Feb. 18.

The team, assisted by coach Mary Keeter, answered two rounds of over 30 questions about the books they had read and studied together and competed over the telephone against five teams from around the state.

The team had won the district championship for third and fourth grade and, after two rounds of 30 questions, they tied for 13th place out of 40 teams in the state battle. The
