Barrow student interns serve Hawaiian communitiesPublished on March 4th, 2010 By ALASKA NEWSPAPERS STAFF Vanessa Packer and Quinton Carroll, both young Inupiat from Barrow, are interning for the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement as part of the nonprofit's Next Generation Leadership Program. Carroll was born and raised in Barrow and is currently attending the University of Hawaii at the Manoa pursuing a bachelor's in business administration. After graduation, he plans to return home and work for the Arctic Slope Regional Corp. Packer, also of Barrow, is pursuing a liberal arts degree in pre-business at Honolulu Community College. She hopes to transfer to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to complete her bachelor's in economics and management. Packer is working in CNHA's Community Development Division, which provides training, technical assistance and other development services for Native Hawaiian communities. Quinton will work in the lending division, assisting with the Homestead Energy Program, which provides loans and grants for low-income families to install solar water heating systems. "From visiting community centers to charter schools, to participating in cultural workshops, policy workshops and symposiums, my time here as been eventful and very rewarding," Packer said. The Next Generation Leadership Project was founded in 2009 and is administered by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. The program is designed to provide practical work experience, as well as opportunities for interns to network with Native community leaders and organizations. "We built the Next Generation Leadership Program to invest in young adults from Hawaii, Alaska and Indian Country," said Robin Puanani Danner, CNHA president and CEO.
